Today we talk about the power in worship. For the notes and prayer plan for this episode, click here.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” – John 4:20-24 (NIV)
This woman at the well brought up a popular theological issue – where is the correct place to worship. God is a spirit means he is not a physical being that is limited to one place to worship. He is present everywhere and can be worshipped anywhere at any time. It isn’t where we worship that counts but how we worship. Is your worship genuine and true?
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. Psalms 8:2 (NIV)
Children are able to trust and praise God without doubts or reservations. As we get older, many of us find this more and more difficult to do. Ask God to give us a childlike faith, removing any barriers to having a close walk with Him.
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” Revelation 4:8-11 (NIV)
The point of chapter 4 of revelation is summed up in verse 11. All creatures in heaven and earth will praise and honor God because he is the Creator and Sustainer if everything.
“The Lord reigns for ever and ever.” When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.” – Exodus 15:18-21 (NIV)
This was a song or praise after God brought great deliverance to His people. Remember when God brings you through a situation to give him praises. Sing, dance and tell people how wonderful God has been to you.
Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10 (NIV)
Daniel didn’t not let anything stop his worship and devotion to God. Even if a law was passed that stopped him from doing so. We need to be consistent in our devotion and worship to God. Have a set time every day and let nothing stop you from missing that appointment with God. Daniel was faithful to spend that quality time with God and God was faithful to protect Daniel from the lions in the den.
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Matthew 4:8-10 (NIV)
The devil offered the whole world to Jesus if Jesus would only fall down and worship him. Today the devil offers us the world by trying to entice us with materialism and power We can resist temptations the same way that Jesus did. If you find yourself craving something that the world offers, quote Jesus’ words to the devil. Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped. – Revelation 5:11-14 (NIV)
Angles have many roles but one of their main roles is to offer continuous praise to God around His throne.
Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. – Hebrews 13:15 (NLT)
As we approach God to worship sometimes we may be feeling hurt or going through as situation where it is difficult to praise God through it. All worship is a sacrifice. Push past how you feel in order to open your mouth, lift your hands and praise God.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25 (NIV)
Paul and Silas were stripped, beaten and placed in chains in the inner cell of the jail. Despite that situation, they praised God, praying and singing while all the other prisoners heard them. No matter what our circumstances, we should praise God. Others may come into a relationship with Christ because of our example.
