The Broken Christian - Daily Devotional

I know it sounds like a bad thing but to be a broken Christian is actually the best possible place that you could be. Being broken means to have your will fully submitted to Gods will. Not being so stubborn that you always have to force your way in a given situation, but you have strength under submission to Gods will and under His control. Where he leads you follow. This is something that I believe all Christians need to learn. Have a listen to this episode. It will bless you

Episode Notes & Bible Verses

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. – Psalm 34:18

The Lord’s eyes see the broken-hearted and hears their heart. He rescues them from all troubles and grants them his peace.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. – Psalm 51:17

This Psalm was written by David after he sinned with Bathsheba. God wants a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart. You can never please God by outward actions (No matter how good) if your inward heart attitude is not right. Are you sorry for your sin? Do you really intend not to do it again? God is only please with this kind of humility and honesty before him.

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. – Isaiah 57:15

This verse reminds us that even though God is high and exalted, he delights to dwell with the lowly and contrite. In this verse the word contrite can also be substituted for humble in heart or one having a repented heart.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5

God’s way of living usually contradicts the world.  The world says that you have to have power and influence in order to dominate everything around you and under you.  Gods word here says that meekness, which is strength under control, will cause you to inherit the earth.  Meaning, you will gain more by being meek. As long as you remain independent and wild, you will never maximize God’s intention for you.  To be meek is to learn to submit your will to Gods.

I must decrease so that he must increase. – John 3:30

John’s willingness to decrease here shows how submitted he was to God’s will. A Christian who is broken will always submit and yield when the anointing of God shows up.  Especially since John’s ministry was doing so well.  Because of some success, it could be a challenge for some people to decrease as the Holy Spirit directs then, when God is moving in another direction. A broken Christian yields to The anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. – James 4:10

To be humble involves working with his power according to his guidance and not our own independent effort.  Bing broken to our own will and submitted to His.  We don’t want to be independent of his power and ability.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6

A broken Christian is not a prideful Christian.  It’s a humble Christian that accepts Gods grace in their life.  If you feel like God is opposing you it could mean that there is pride in your heart that needs to be dealt with.  Once that pride is gone and your will is in submission to his, then He will be able to pour out his grace in your life and you will see results that He intends for you to have.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

This is an example of meekness and being broken to the Will of God.  Though we all have the ability to do what we want, we submit our will to Gods so that He can work through us.  Here Paul said that it was no longer him that lived but Jesus Christ that lived through him. He pictured himself as dead for Christ to live through him. Strength under control. This is a good example of what it means to be broken. Meaning, your will is completely submitted to Gods.
