His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.  When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom. – Job 1:4-5

In these verses we see Job sacrificing and praying for his children in case they have sinned.  The main reason why I use this verse first is to highlight that father should be the leaders in the home to pray for their children.   This was Jobs regular custom, to present sacrifices to God in case his children sinned.

Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord. – Psalm 128:1-4

In Gods kingdom, there is always an action and a reaction, Cause and effect, or seed time and harvest.  In this verse it mentions that those who reverence (or fear) the Lord will receive a blessing.  Part of the blessing is that your children will be like olive shoots around the table.  This translated means that you will have many children that will be fruitful and happy.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:1-3

As you pray for your children, pray that they will have an obedient spirit.  Pray that they will be obedient and honor you as their parent, pray also that they will be obedient to authority.  Their teachers in school, police officers and rules wherever they go.  This is so they will be blessed, have long life and that it will go well for them.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart…He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” – Psalm 91:1-2

As your children grow older you will eventually give them more and more independence.  That means that you as a parent will not always be there to watch over them to ensure their safety.  But God is not limited by geographical locations.  Your prayer over your children should be in line with Psalms 91:1-2.  That God will over shadow them and keep them safe wherever they go.  That God will be their refuge and his angles will always be around your children. 

The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. – Psalm 121:7-8

As parents you can pray this verse over your children every day.  That god will keep them from all harm and watch over them  That God will keep them safe as they travel to wherever they have to go today.  This is especially important as we hear of violence and school shootings almost every month. 

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. – Proverbs 13:20

We can learn a lot from reading the proverbs so I’m going to highlight this verse among the many that I can use for this episode.  As parents one of the prayers we should pray is that our children will have the right friends around him.  With this I also want to remind you what 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”  Watch out to make sure that you children are associating with the right friends and pray that bad influences will not stay in their lives.

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household. – Acts 16:31

That your children will believe in Jesus for themselves and have a strong personal relationship with God through Jesus.   As parents, you have power and influence over what your children believe.  So as much as this is a prayer for your children, it’s also an encouragement to you to ensure that God is the head of your household.

The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. – Numbers 6:24-26

A blessing was one way of asking for God’s divine favor to rest upon others.  This blessing helps us to understand what a blessing was supposed to do. 

1. God would bless and keep you (favor & protection)
2. Make his face shine on us (God will be pleased with us)
3. Be gracious to you (God will be merciful and compassionate)
4. Turn his face towards us (God will look at us with his approval)
5. Give peace (Nothing missing nothing broken)

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you hope and a future. – Jeremiah 29:11

As parents you probably have no greater desire for your children than to grow up and see them walk in their God given destiny and using their gifts and talents to be a blessing to others.  You can speak this verse over your children and declare that they will achieve the plans that God has for them.
