Taking Authority Over The Enemy - Daily Devotion

We have power and authority in the name of Jesus.  Most of you probably know that song by Tasha Cobbs called Break Every Chain, and if you were part of any worship service when that song was sung you probably saw signs and wonders follow it.  The truth is that we have authority and power in the name of Jesus and we need to live and operate in that authority.  We are the army that is rising up here on earth to carry out the work of God and take authority over the enemy.

Episode Notes & Bible Verses

In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.  Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”  “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.  “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” – Mark 11:20-25

It should seem impossible to move mountains into the sea so Jesus used this picture to show that God can do anything.  God has given us authority and will answer our prayers if we are believers, If we don’t hold grudges against other people, if we pray with unselfish motives and in our request is for the good of Gods kingdom.

A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!”  Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered. – Acts 19:14-16

In order to have power and authority in Jesus Name, you have to have an intimate relationship with him.  A lot of people know the name of Jesus and who is is, but they lack the relationship with him, thus don’t operate in power and authority.  As believers, our authority comes from our relationship with Jesus and knowing his Word.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

After Jesus rose from the dead, he was giving the great commission to his disciples, he let them know that He has the authority and has given them authority in His name.  Today, we are followers of Christ and we have that same authority in His name.  We need to use that authority against all the plans of the enemy.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7

Satan is trying to get us to sin and fall away from God.  He does this through tempting us to sin. In this verse we see that all we need to do is submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee from us.   When we are submitting to God, we are recognizing Him as the final and ultimate authority over everything.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. – Romans 13:1

To have authority over anything you first need to ensure that you are under authority.  God has placed governing authorities in place in our countries, and as long as they are not doing anything that impacts our safety or rights as citizens in our country we have to remain under their authority.  Its as we are submitted to their authority that we will be able to exercise our God given authority over the devil.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. – 1 John 4:4

We have Jesus living on the inside of us and the Power of the Holy Spirit working through us.  Since this is true, we need to remember that we have power and authority in Jesus name over the unseen spiritual realm through prayer.  We are to use this authority.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” – Mark 16:17

This verse is not saying that we should put ourselves into harm’s way just to prove that that we can survive drinking poison or a snake bite.  What it is saying is that as we go to carry out God’s work and the great commission to save others, God will protect us and not allow us to fall victim to any of these troubles.  We also see that as we are doing Gods will, that we have the authority and power to drive out demons in Jesus name.

That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,  far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. – Ephesians 1:19-23

God the Father has appointed his Son as head over everything for the church which is his body.  Therefore the church, operating under Christ Kingdom authority can give you the victory over any plan of the enemy and show the world the true power that believers in God can walk in.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:10

Jesus have come to give us abundant life.  If the enemy tried to do anything to steel, kill or destroy then we have authority in Jesus name to enforce this promise to be present in our lives.  We have a right to life to the fullest while we are alive.  We need to enforce it using our authority as believers.
