Does Kanye West Really Believe Jesus is King?

One of the most popular figures in hip hop for almost the past two decades is Kanye west. You may or may not have heard his music, but it’s kind of hard not notice what he’s doing now. His past was filled with questionable lyrics in songs and life decisions that don’t quite line up with the bible. But He just released a gospel album. In this episode, I’m going to answer some questions by looking at what the bible says and go over the topic of If God is REALLY working through Kanye West now?

1. Can God work through Kanye?

I don’t really follow too much entertainment news but out of the little bit I do watch,  I have seen a few situation that Kanye was in over the last 10+ years that would cause me to say that he was in the furthest place from God or the least likely to be used by God.  However,  So was Paul the apostle.  This is what I know from the bible.  In 1 Timothy 1:15-15

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

Paul then went on to write a majority of the New Testament and mentored some of the other writers of the New Testament.  If God can do this through Paul, then what can stop God from working through Kanye??

Think about these verses in the bible.

Numbers 22:21-39.  I’m going to read verses 27-29.

It says “When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”  Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.””

So there you have it.   God using a donkey and opening its mouth to direct a mans heart away from doing harm to Israel.  Furthermore, God can change the hearts of Kings to accomplish his purposes.  Think about Cyrus the Persian King.   God working through Cyrus – Ezra 1:1-11 in context but I’m going to read verses 1-4

“In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing:

“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:

“‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. 3 Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. 4 And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.’”

Cyrus was not a follower of God but God used him to return the Jews back to their homeland.  God could be working through Kanye’s music to return millions of people back onto God.

The best example that I can give of God using someone who was not devoted to him was Judas.  He betrayed Jesus and which lead to his crucifixion.    You can read Luke 22 for this event in context, but I’m going to just read, Luke 22:47-48.

While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

God allowing Judas to betray Jesus so that He could die on the cross.  But by Jesus dying on a cross that caused all of humanity who believe on Him to be saved.   So to this point, God can work through anything and anyone to accomplish his purpose it doesn’t matter who they are or if they follow God or not.

2.What if Kanye is just in it for the money?

We know that musicians, rappers, Music producers have the potential to make a lot of money.  If they are award winning and have multiple top hits they can have the potential to become multi-millionaires… as the case with Kanye.  Someone mentioned this to me when they herd that he was coming out with a Gospel album.  In their opinion, they think that Kanye was after more money by targeting Christians.  I don’t know if this is true or not, but If he markets to a different demographic than before he does have the potential to make more money off Christians.  And it is possible that this is his motive, but I don’t know this.  What I want to focus on is this.

We all have to give an account of what we have done in this life once we die.  If you read Hebrews 9:27 it says.  Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,  Kanye will have to stand before God at that time and give an account for all he has done.  If his motive was to deceive us then he will have to give an account to God for that.  If his motive is to encourage us and draw us closer to God through his music then He will have to give an account for that as well.  We all will be judged by God in this manner so the important thing here is the motive of the heart.

Romans 14:12-13 also goes on to say, “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.”

So It doesn’t matter to me. What matters is that Gods will is being done. Kanye will have to give an account for everything he’s done on heat to God good or bad and I am not in a position to  Judge him.

3. God is Using Kanye, Why?  There are more noble people with cleaner past than him.

I was thinking about this question and I remember Paul the apostle again. You can read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 to see what I’m talking about, but In verse 22 it says this, “…I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”

It’s almost like going to a foreign country and trying to communicate with the people there in English.  They would not be able to understand you, even if you have the most beneficial information that they could need. However, If someone from that country who can relate to those people when and spoke to them in a language that they can understand then they will be able to receive that beneficial life changing information.

I believe that this is what God is doing through Kanye West.  There are some people who would not step foot in a church to receive salvation.  Or they would not listen to the last message from Bishop TD Jakes… BUT, they may be familiar with Kanye’s style of music and like to listen to him.  God, can be using Kanye’s music to reach people who would not have otherwise had an opportunity to hear about Jesus.

We also need to keep in mind that what Matthew 24:14 says.  “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

As Kanye does his thing, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is spreading to more and more people who haven’t heard about Jesus yet.  Not that I am saying that Jesus is coming back tomorrow, but This is just a sign that the end is soon. By Kanye releasing a Gospel album, and spreading the name of Jesus in my opinion it is part of  what Matt 24:14 is saying.

4.Is God using Kanye like He used Moses?

And finally, God could be working through Kanye like he worked through Moses.

Moses was born an Israelite, then to avoid death his mother sent him along the Nile river where he ended up being raised by the Egyptians, only to go into the wilderness for some time before coming back to his roots to lead Gods people out of Captivity.

You can look at Kanye’s journey almost the same way.  From some of his early music you can see that there was a spiritual element in his song.  Jesus Walks and Through the Wire.  Then you can say that Kanye went through a period of growing and learning from the world, where he really grew in status and learned about the music industry, only to now come back to his roots to try to create music that leads people back to God.  If you look at society today, I think you will agree with me that this world needs someone to lead them out of captivity.

Conclusion

That’s all I have to say on this topic, but I’m praying for God’s will to be done.  I hope that Kanye’s heart is truly turned toward God.  I know that he still says some things that are not 100% in line with the bible but let’s show him mercy and pray that he can get the right mentorship and grow closer to God through Jesus.  Also, as Christians we need to remember to pray for our loved ones so that they would receive salvation, and pray for those who God is using to bring salvation to others.  Gods will, will always be accomplished.
