Episode Notes & Bible Verses
How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be! Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table. That is the Lord’s blessing for those who fear him. – Psalms 128:1-4
Since God designed men to be the godly leaders in their homes these verses are addressed to him. When the man fears the lord his wife will be fruitful. His children will be like olive trees bearing much fruit also and will be anointed to do great things. This man will encourage his wife to be fruitful and will teach his kids wisdom around the table. This will result in the family being productive members of society.
Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands. Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. They themselves will be wealthy, and their good deeds will last forever. – Psalms 112:1-3
Fearing God is about how you live. Not merely in what you say. And it’s in living right you pass on a Godly legacy to your children so they can stand and grow from the example you set in the home.
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:1-3
As long as you live you should always strive to honor your parents. When God sees it he will allow his blessings to follow you and prosper you with long life on the earth. The requirement to honor your parents is not limited to your age or if you are dependent on them or not. We should always honor our parents.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. – Ephesians 6:4
Fathers we need to be extra careful when dealing with our children. We have an extremely important role to be Godly leaders in the home. Don’t be so harsh that you scar the heart of your children. Discipline your children with love in mind in order to restore them and correct the bad behaviour. You do not want your children to become bitter towards you. Praise them and make them know that you are proud to be their dad.
“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors. – Deuteronomy 11:18-21
One way to apply this verse is like this. Try to use every situation that you and your family go through to share and teach about a principal from the Gods word. Wether it’s a good or bad situation, use it to teach your family something about God. When your children grow up they will remember those situations.
And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. – Ephesians 5:21-27
Being submitted to another person is often a misunderstood concept. It does not mean you become a doormat. But it means to be under the vision of the person you are submitted to. Employees are submitted to their company’s vision. Basketball or football players are submitted to the direction of their coach. A choir is submitted to the choir director. When there is submission there is order because everyone will go in the same direction. And the person who is the leader is also submitted to a higher authority. As wives submit to their husbands, their husbands have to be submitted to God.
But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15
The leader in your household needs to establish which side the family is standing on. In society today people are straddling the fence on so many topics but God has call us to be bold and stand on His side. We have to boldly say that we are on Gods side and serve him alone.
The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. – Genesis 2:15
This is part of the man’s role. To watch over his household and to tend to it. Practically how do we do this? Be vigilant on what’s going on in your house. See what television shows your family is watching or music your family is listening to. What friends are influencing your children? If any of those influences are not Godly, then men are to cut it of some it doesn’t alter the life of your family members. Your home is your garden.
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. – Proverbs 13:24
The word rod here refers to a shepherds rod. The shepherd would use that rod to direct his sheep so they don’t go astray and has a hook at the end to pull them closer to him when they get too far. Likewise parents should use discipline to make sure their children don’t stray off in disobedience. And this is a sign that you love your children because you care enough to discipline the foolish disobedience out of their character.
